Let’s Talk About The History Of The Handbag!!!

Origin of the word:

The word purse is derived from the Latin bursa, from the Greek βυρσα, meaning oxhide. (Wikipedia)

And away we go

The exact time frame of the first handbag seems to be up for debate. Wikipedia states the first handbag was found with Ötzi the Iceman[1] who lived around 3,300 BCE. Another early example is found in Egyptian hieroglyphics which shows them as pouches worn around their waist. I guess this would be the early, early version of the fanny pack!! Next we find them in Europe in the 14th century when status starts to come into play. You could tell a woman’s social status by the stitched patterns and quality of the bag she carried.

15th Century

As we move on through the centuries, we start to find both men and women carrying purses. It was customary for a man to give his new bride a purse with a love story embroidered on it. Sounds like a good gift to me!!

16th Century

Next we get into the 16th century which finds handbags starting to get a little more commercial and made out of more commonly found materials like leather and drawstring.  These were typically worn by travelers diagonally across their body.

17th Century

In the 17th century girls are taught at an early age how to embroider more elaborate patterns and this in turn prepares them for their own marriage. This would also be the rise of Men’s pockets which would allow men the freedom of carrying a larger bag.

18th Century

The 18th century has women carrying reticules (a woman's drawstring handbag; usually made of net or beading or brocade; used in 18th and 19th centuries). Most women had more than one reticule for different occasions and outfits.  We now see that handbags are starting to be used as more of a fashion statement than for a mere convenience. Magazines are also starting to advertise the glory of the handbag.

1900’s … And now it gets really exciting!

We now begin using the term handbag which is derived from the use of luggage that men carried. Women are now inspired by handbags that contain internal pockets, locks, and fasteners. It’s the 1940’s and the war is in full swing, handbags are starting to be built out of wood and plastic and are larger and more military in style. Metal was not used as it was saved for war supplies. The 1950’s brought us Louis Vuitton, Hermes and Channel. Christian Dior sends in the “tiny” purse. This represented wealth, sophistication and beauty.  A women found carrying the tiny bag gave off a different “sexual” message than of someone found carrying, say, the military styled bag. (Steele and Borrelli 1999). In the 80’s with the rise of sports, fitness and technology a whole new market comes to light. We start to see nylon, waterproof and lighter material. Prada also introduces the first unisex nylon knapsack

Welcome to the 21st century!!

We are now flooded with purse, wallet and accessory styles! We have so many choices; designer handbags, replica, plastic, nylon, cloth, all colors of the rainbow (Black handbags, blue handbags and a whole lot more), hobos, totes, leather, messenger bags, and let’s not forget the man bag or murse (man purse) We can thank gorgeous Kiefer Sutherland from 24 for bringing the man bag into popularity. We have high end designers with the likes of Gucci, Marc Jacobs, Fendi, Burberry, Chloe, Dior, Dolce & Gabbana, Ferragamo, Michael Kors, Juicy Couture, Lauren… And trust me that’s just a few of them!!

I think it’s safe to say that the magnificent handbag has been around and will continue to stay around for many, many centuries to come…Thank goodness!!
